During this fascinating panel, we'll learn from two deeply experienced directors from right here in Colorado: Steve Reinemund and Denise O'Leary. They will provide insights into how their Boards successfully navigated both the issues arising from the Great Recession, and those that came with the economic rebound over the past decade. They’ll cast their eyes forward, offering their views on the critical issues looming on the horizon for directors in a variety of industries. And our panelists will speak about how their corporate board experiences have informed their work serving on large non-profit Boards.
Mr. Reinemund is the former CEO and Chairman of Pepsico, and currently serves on the Boards of ExxonMobil, Marriott International, and Wal-Mart. Ms. O'Leary currently serves on the Boards of Medtronic, US Airways, and Calpine Energy, following her earlier role as a General Partner at Menlo Ventures. And moderating this high-powered fireside chat will be Barbara Baumann, President of Cross Creek Energy Corporation, and NACD Colorado Board Member.
Steve is the former Chair and CEO of Pepsico, Inc, and the Retired Dean of Business and Professor of Leadership and Strategy at Wake Forest University. He currently serves on the boards of Wal-Mart Stores, Inc., ExxonMobil Corporation, and Marriott International, Inc. Steve previously served as a director of Johnson & Johnson and American Express Company. He is a director of privately held Chick-fil-A, Inc., and serves as a trustee of the United States Naval Academy and the Cooper Clinic Institute.
Steve graduated from the United States Naval Academy and served as an officer in the United States Marine Corps. He received a MBA from the University of Virginia, and has been awarded honorary doctorate degrees by Johnson and Wales University and Bryant University. He and his wife Gail have recently re-located to the Denver area.
Denise was formerly a General Partner with Menlo Ventures, and has been a private venture capital investor in a variety of early stage companies. She currently is a director of American Airlines Group, Inc., Calpine Corporation, and Medtronic, plc. and was formerly a director of US Airways Group, Inc., Del Monte Foods, ALZA Corporation, Chiron Corporation, America West Holding Corporation, and numerous private companies. She is the current chair-elect of the board of trustees of the University of Denver and serves as a trustee of the Bonfils-Stanton Foundation and is a member of Rose Community Foundation’s Investment Committee. Additionally, she was appointed by Gov. John Hickenlooper to the board of Connect for Health Colorado, the state health exchange. She previously served as a trustee of The Denver Foundation and of Stanford University, where she chaired the Committee of the Medical Center.
Denise graduated from Stanford University and received an MBA from Harvard University. She and her husband, Kent Thiry, live in the Denver area.
Barbara Baumann is president of Cross Creek Energy Corporation. She formerly worked for Amoco Corporation (later BP Amoco) as well as Associated Energy Managers, an oil and gas private equity manager. Barbara is a director of Devon Energy Corporation and Buckeye Partners, LP. She is an independent trustee of the Putnam Mutual Funds, and formerly served on the boards of publicly-traded SM Energy Company, UNS Energy Corporation, and CVR Energy Corporation. Barbara is also active in local non-profits, serving on the board of the Denver Foundation and on the Finance Committee of Children’s Hospital Colorado. She currently chairs the board of trustees of Mount Holyoke College, her alma mater. Barbara also holds an MBA from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania.
